Express Entry Draws

IRCC conducts Express Entry draws approximately every one to two weeks. Here are the most recent results:

Recent Express Entry Draws (January 2026)

Draw Date Draw # Program Invitations Minimum CRS
January 21, 2026 392 Canadian Experience Class 6,000 509
January 20, 2026 391 Provincial Nominee Program 681 746
January 7, 2026 390 Canadian Experience Class 6,000 511

Key Trend: CRS cutoffs are declining. The January 21, 2026 CEC draw with a cutoff of 509 is the lowest CEC score since 2022. This signals reduced competition in the Express Entry pool and improved chances for candidates with lower scores.

Category-Based Selection (2026)

Since 2023, IRCC conducts category-based draws targeting specific skills and attributes:

Category Description Typical CRS Range
French Language Proficiency CLB 7+ in French 350-420
Healthcare Occupations Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied health 400-450
STEM Professions Engineers, IT professionals, scientists 450-500
Skilled Trades Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders 380-430
Transport Occupations Truck drivers, pilots, railway workers 400-440
Agriculture & Agri-food Farm workers, food processing 380-420

How to Benefit from Category-Based Draws:

  • Ensure your NOC code matches target occupations
  • Improve French language scores for the French proficiency category
  • Update your profile promptly when qualifications change

How to Improve Your CRS Score

If your CRS score is below recent draw cutoffs, here are proven strategies to increase your points:

Quick Wins (30-60 Days)

1. Improve Language Scores

Each CLB band increase can add significant points.

Improvement Potential Points Gain
CLB 8 to CLB 9 (one ability) +6 to +8 points
CLB 8 to CLB 9 (all abilities) +24 to +32 points
CLB 9 to CLB 10 (all abilities) +12 to +24 points

2. Add Second Official Language

Taking a French test (TEF/TCF) when English is your first language can add:

  • 15-30 points through skill transferability
  • 25-50 points as additional factor (French proficiency bonus)

Medium-Term Strategies (3-12 Months)

3.Gain Canadian Work Experience

One year of Canadian work experience (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) adds:

  • 40-80 points (core points)
  • 25-50 points (skill transferability)

4.omplete Canadian Education

A Canadian credential adds:

  • 15 points (1-2 year program)
  • 30 points (3+ years or graduate degree)

5.Obtain a Provincial Nomination

A provincial nomination adds 600 points, virtually guaranteeing an ITA.

Provincial Nominee Programs with Express Entry streams:

  • Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)
  • BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP)
  • Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)
  • Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP)
  • Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP)
  • Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)
  • And others

Other Strategies

6.Valid Job Offer

A valid job offer supported by LMIA adds:

  • 50 points (most TEER 0, 1, 2, 3 positions)
  • 200 points (senior management positions)

7.Include a Spouse with Strong Credentials

If your spouse has high language scores, education, and Canadian work experience, include them in your profile for additional points.

Common Express Entry Mistakes to Avoid

1. Incorrect NOC Code Selection

Choosing the wrong NOC code is the most common error. Your work experience must match the lead statement and main duties of the NOC, not just the job title.

2. Expired Documents

Language tests are valid for 2 years. ECAs are valid for 5 years. Ensure all documents remain valid until you receive PR.

3. Incomplete Work Experience Documentation

Reference letters must include:

  • Company letterhead
  • Supervisor name and contact
  • Your job title and duties
  • Dates of employment
  • Hours worked per week
  • Salary/wage information

4. Misrepresentation

Any false information leads to a 5-year ban from Canadian immigration. Be accurate and honest in all declarations.

5. Missing the 60-Day Deadline

After receiving an ITA, you have exactly 60 days to submit a complete application. Missing this deadline wastes your invitation.

Express Entry with a Spouse or Family

You can include your spouse/common-law partner and dependent children in your Express Entry application.

Including a Spouse

Option 1: Spouse as Non-Principal

If your spouse has lower qualifications, you may receive more points using the single applicant points structure.

Option 2: Spouse Included for Points

If your spouse has strong language scores, education, and Canadian experience, including them can add up to 40 points.

Compare Both Scenarios:

Use the IRCC CRS calculator to test both options before submitting your profile.

Dependent Children

Children under 22 who are unmarried and not in a common-law relationship can be included as dependents.

Fees for Dependents:

  • Processing fee: $260 per child
  • RPRF: Not applicable for children
  • Biometrics: $85 (if 14 years or older)
